How to Select Keywords for Your Strategy

You can use Google Keyword Planner, Google searches, or paid tools like Jess to find keyword ideas, but how do you select the ones most likely to increase your search presence and get more business online? You’ll want to choose keywords that will lead the right audiences to your website when they are shopping and ready to buy.

For example, suppose you own a local coffee shop in the city near a popular museum. While you might enjoy steady traffic from regulars during the week, you can optimize your site to make sure tourists looking for a coffee break can find you during your weekend hours.

Let’s suppose your keyword research included this set of keywords. Keep in mind a typical list of keyword ideas would be much longer. I’m using a small one to make it easier to illustrate the principles of keyword selection.

Coffee shops great neck ny
Coffee shops with outdoor seating
Coffee near me
Best coffee shop near me
Coffee beans

First, you’d want to eliminate any keywords that are clearly irrelevant, which in this case is “coffee table.” Keyword research tools aren’t perfect so you should expect them to include some irrelevant keywords that you’ll need to remove from your list.

Next, you will want to eliminate keywords that don’t describe your specific business or that don’t support your current strategy. Let’s suppose you don’t have outdoor seating. It wouldn’t make sense to try to attract people looking for an outdoor dining experience. Further, even if you sell coffee beans, you probably aren’t trying to get tourists in the door to buy them. It might be worth keeping this in the list for another SEO strategy, but probably not for the one targeting tourists.
